Somali Fisheries Workers Union in Kismayo and Mogadishu celebrated World Oceans Day on June 8, 2023 with a beach cleanup and discussions.
Bander Beyla’s Ceenaad Fishing Cooperative organized a beach cleanup (pictured below) and celebration. Fishing and related activities are the main source of local income and an integral part of the community’s culture. They know firsthand the importance of maintaining the health of the local marine environment, so they are proud to contribute to the global effort to conserve the ocean and its many resources.
Hassan Mohamed Roble the National Chairman said “The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.
